How to wash towels so they stay soft.
A new towel is soft; a few washes later it is stiff and no longer absorbs. The cause is almost always how it is washed, not the towel.
Why do towels go stiff after a few washes?
Fabric softener leaves a water-repellent coating on cotton fibre. It feels soft when dry, but it is exactly what stops water reaching the fibre. Detergent residue and hard water build up the same way.
How should a new towel be washed the first time?
Wash it on its own. A new towel still sheds loose fibre from weaving, and it will transfer to everything else in the drum. A cup of white vinegar in that first wash sets the colour and strips the finishing residue.
What temperature and cycle?
Warm, around 40°C, is enough for everyday towels. Hotter water fades colour faster without cleaning meaningfully better. Use half the recommended detergent: towels need less than clothes, and the excess stays in the fibre.
Should I use fabric softener?
Not on towels. If you want them softer, put half a cup of white vinegar in the softener drawer instead — it clears soap residue without coating the cotton.
Tumble dry or air-dry?
Tumble dry low, or air-dry somewhere with moving air and out of long harsh sun. High heat makes cotton brittle and brittle fibre breaks — that is why frequently hot-dried towels go frayed and thin. Do not leave damp towels sitting in the machine; that smell is very hard to undo later.
How often should towels be washed?
A bath towel used by one person is fine for three or four uses, provided it dries fully in between. Face towels want washing more often. A towel that never dries properly is where the bacteria — and the smell — come from.
Can a stiff towel be recovered?
Usually. Run one wash with a cup of white vinegar and no detergent, then a second with half a cup of baking soda. Between them they dissolve most of the buildup. Then tumble dry low and stop using softener.
